The background
My career has taken me through technology leadership, systems integration, application development, business process improvement, cybersecurity, and automation. I have served as a CTO, CIO, technology executive, consultant, and U.S. Navy Operations Specialist.
Across those roles, one lesson has stayed consistent: technology alone is rarely the hard part. The hard part is understanding the work well enough to build systems people can actually depend on.
Before focusing heavily on automation training, I spent more than three decades working around business and technology systems — systems integration, application development, technology strategy, process improvement, managed services, cybersecurity, and organizational technology leadership. As President of Symbiont, Inc., I continue to work in an environment where technology has to support real organizational outcomes.
That background influences the way I teach automation. I look at an automation the same way I would look at any other business system:
- What outcome is it supposed to produce?
- What assumptions is it making?
- What can go wrong?
- Who is responsible when it does?
- How do we know the result is actually correct?
Those questions matter whether the system is a large enterprise application or a five-node n8n workflow.
Why I created the pathway
There is no shortage of automation content online. You can find videos showing how to connect an app, call an API, build an AI agent, or copy a workflow in a few minutes. That can be useful. But real automation work asks harder questions.
- What happens when the input is incomplete?
- What happens when an API returns something unexpected?
- What happens when a workflow runs successfully but produces the wrong business result?
- What happens when the same request arrives twice?
- What happens when someone else has to troubleshoot the workflow six months later?
Those are the questions that shaped the Bulletproof Automation Builder Pathway. The goal is not to produce people who can reproduce demonstrations. It is to develop builders who can inspect, test, troubleshoot, document, and defend the systems they create.
I do not want learners to leave a class simply knowing which node to click next. I want them to understand what data is moving, why a workflow makes a decision, what happens when something goes wrong, how to verify the result, and how to explain the system they built. That is the difference between following an automation tutorial and becoming an automation builder.
How I teach automation
Good automation should be understandable, testable, and appropriately controlled. That means emphasising the habits that are easiest to skip when you are first learning.
- Inspect the data instead of guessing.
- Test every meaningful path, not just the happy path.
- Verify the business outcome, not merely the green execution indicator.
- Treat failure as something to design for.
- Use AI where judgment or interpretation adds value, but keep deterministic controls around critical actions.
- Never give an automated system more access than it genuinely needs.
These are not slogans. They are built directly into the Foundations training, the Intermediate cohort, and the BCAB certification standard — where "silently discarding failed records" and "leaving a critical action dependent on unvalidated AI output" are published as critical safety failures that trigger remediation regardless of score.
Building builders
Organizations need people who can do more than operate software. I saw that need firsthand while trying to fill automation roles at Bulletproof Automations — finding people who could actually design, troubleshoot, and maintain reliable automation systems was harder than I expected.
There are plenty of people learning automation, plenty of tutorials, and plenty of impressive-looking workflows online. But watching someone build an automation is not the same as being able to build one that a business can trust in production. A workflow can look impressive on a screen and still fall apart when the data is incomplete, an API behaves unexpectedly, a request arrives twice, a branch was never tested, or an AI model returns something nobody anticipated.
That creates a problem for both sides. Builders need a way to develop and prove real capability. Companies need a way to identify people who have demonstrated more than familiarity with a tool.
Builders don’t wait. Neither can the companies looking for them.
I could have waited for someone else to create the kind of rigorous automation training and competency standard I wanted to hire against. Instead, I built it.
The pathway exists to teach, develop, assess, and ultimately certify automation builders against a defined professional standard — people who can be given a real requirement, make sound design decisions, build the solution, troubleshoot it when something goes wrong, and explain why it can be trusted. The BCAB assessment then asks them to prove that competency rather than simply show that they attended the training.
That distinction matters to me. A certificate can record that someone completed a course. A professional certification should mean they demonstrated a standard.
BCAB is a minimum standard for automation roles at Bulletproof Automations. Holding it does not constitute an application, offer, or guarantee of employment.
Built with Ghana, for a wider community
Bulletproof Automations is a United States company, based in Jacksonville, Florida. Its first training cohorts were developed and delivered online with learners in Ghana, working closely with people interested in building practical automation skills and creating new professional opportunities.
The larger objective is not geographically limited. The need for competent automation builders exists everywhere. As automation and AI become part of ordinary business operations, organizations will increasingly need people who understand how to build these systems responsibly — and how to recognise when they are not working as intended.
That is the professional community I want Bulletproof Automations to help build.

This pathway and the credentials issued under it are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or accredited by n8n GmbH or any other vendor. n8n is referenced descriptively as the platform on which competence is currently assessed.
